Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland
Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland (RMHC SEQ) provides accommodation and support services for seriously ill or injured children and their families. RMHC SEQ has three Houses in Brisbane; one at Herston beside the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, one at South Brisbane directly opposite the Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH) and Mater Mothers’ Hospital and a House in the QCH. The organisation also has Ronald McDonald Family Rooms located inside the Gold Coast University Hospital and QCH; and assists school-aged children with serious illnesses and injuries to catch up on missed education following treatment and recovery, through the Ronald McDonald Learning Program.

Cooper and his mum Billie-Jo travelled from Ayr in North Queensland to stay at our Ronald McDonald House in South Brisbane due to Cooper’s diagnosis of stage IV neuroblastoma in his right kidney, chest, pelvis and skull. For 15 months, brave little Cooper endured five rounds of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and major surgery to remove the largest tumor in his kidney.
“This House has been an absolute blessing, not just for me and my family, but every family with a sick child who has stayed here. The staff and volunteers are such a great team, and so helpful in any way they can. The meal nights gave us a really good break and was such a support to be around other families in the same situation who understood what we were going through,” said Billie-Jo.
Despite his long ordeal, Cooper is a happy little boy with a cheeky smile that lights up the House. While the family is happy to be heading home, Billie-Jo said donating makes all the difference. “People have good hearts to donate and keep this House going. I don’t know what I or other families would have done if this House wasn’t here for us during such a difficult time.”
